Daytrotter Sessions - Benjy Ferree
I posted a while back about Benjy Ferree being a real good up and coming artist. Since then he's done a Daytrotter Session. He sings "In the Countryside", "The Desert", "A Little At A Time" and "They Were Here". Worth listening to his songs, especially "In the Countryside" and "The Desert". All songs free to stream and download as usual with Daytrotter Sessions.

Daytrotter Sessions - Mason Jennings
One of my favorites Mason Jennings (as discovered by my brother Jason) has done a Daytrotter session. I always knew he was made for this type of deal. He plays: "I Love You and Buddha Too", "Fighter Girl", "Jackson Square" and "Crown", all free to download.
In case you didn't see the first go around of the Mason Jennings recommendation, he is highly unique in his songwriting, singing and voice....check out his main site. All his albums are good, especially "Use Your Voice". I could write a great review of this guy but you wouldn't be able to understand him until you listen.

The Apathy Eulogy
The Apathy Eulogy - Purevolume. They describe themselves as indie, punk, acoustic two part-harmonies. They definitely have that punk and emo presence...but it's more of the post-punk era where you have the voices of punk artists but the use of acoustic guitars makes it more emo. I'm typically not a huge fan of this genre of music but I actually dig these guys because of the combination of acoustic guitars and light percussion with post-punk voices. Plus I know that some of you that track this site are fans, so enjoy. Listen to all songs on the purevolume page.

The Pictures Have It
Jack Johnson & Matt Costa - "Lullaby"
Album Review - Death Cab For Cutie "Narrow Stairs"
Looks like Death Cab's newest album didn't impress Pitchfork. They gave it a 6.0. Here is an exceprt from the summary:
Surely Death Cab's awkward position as one of the few indie rock groups with a platinum record would be enough to drive anyone to drink. Fellow million-sellers Modest Mouse brought on Johnny Marr for their second major-label LP; the Decemberists, who also signed to a major but didn't go platinum, have yet to release their follow-up. Narrow Stairs' musical growing pains make sense for an album that stares into the banal void of contemporary adulthood. If you love the band, you'll probably find enough reasons here to keep sticking with them.

Daytrotter Sessions - Sondre Lerche
Daytrotter
There are so many music/entertainment websites that copy one another, scrambling so fast to “discover” or present something new to the world. And just because you get there first, it doesn’t really make you an explorer. We did poke a stars and stripes into the moon, but we could always see it. We knew it was there. It wasn’t new. We can always come along and say we did, saw, heard something first, but we’re never right. What Daytrotter is attempting to do is to not kid around with you and tell you that we found something that you never knew existed. We are going to contribute to the musical landscape, not just toss it around like a used book or a stolen pick-up line. We’re going to give you something that you truly have never heard. We are not giving you songs from someone you love’s record album, thereby stealing from someone you love. We’re giving you exclusive, re-worked, alternate versions of old songs and unreleased tracks by some of your favorite bands and by a lot of your next favorite bands.
Daytrotter Sessions
These fine people – as they’re traveling through America’s heartland – take two hours out of their travels between shows to stop in for a Daytrotter Session at Futureappletree Studio One in downtown Rock Island, Ill. The name of the city is not ironic. They use borrowed instruments, play with their touring mates, utilize an often unkempt toilet, eat some food and then cram back into their vans for the last half of the drive. What they leave behind is a pile of ashes, sometimes a forgotten stocking hat and four absolutely collectible songs that often impart on whomever listens to them the true intensity that these musicians put into their art, sometimes with more clarity than they do when they have months to tinker with overdubs and experiments. These songs are them as they are on that particular day, on that particular tour – dirty and alive. We want you to make this your new home as it is ours. We promise that you will love it here.
New Andrew Bird blog post and music
He also has 4 free downloads at daytrotter: Fiery Crash, Lull, A Breaks B, and Plasticities. They are all alternate recordings done in the daytrotter studios. A Breaks B is done with Dianoga which Bird is guesting on their upcoming album.

Last.fm Free mp3's = Happiness Without Jail
Last.fm is one of my personal favorite websites and they are even more favorites because of their "Weekly Free Download Chart". You'd think on a free download chart they'd only have less than popular bands (which is not always a bad thing) or stuff you are interested in but that's not always the case with the list. To list a few from this week: Sufjan Stevens, Andrew Bird, Broken Social Scene, Yo La Tengo, The Mountain Goats, Jose Gonzalez, etc... Obviously there are some on there not near as good as the few listed above, but at least you get those and can try out others. Enjoy your free music without Big Al in the top bunk.

The Weepies new album?
Morrissey Business Lessons?
Morrissey's song lyrics are to be used to teach students about business.
Three researchers have pored over the work of the former Smiths frontman over the past 20 years to apply them to how relationships work in the business world.
Now their 8,000-word study, Business Relationships the Morrissey Way, is to be used to teach students about the hard-headed world of commerce.

On another note, as Gregarious aptly named this site Distraction Jackson, I think we need more than just music and a sampling of distractions. I'd like to keep the music as the main element of the site but bring in more distractions. So, you'll be seeing more of that.
Here's to distractions when we need them most.
