Lil Wayne, when he was little

Lil Wayne's new album cover:

He provided MTV with the following quote about the cover:
"That's me! All day. No computers. Only thing [digitally enhanced] was the tattoos. My momma gave me the picture for me to put on the album cover. I don't know where my momma found that picture. My momma, she gave me that and one more. If you would have saw the other picture, you'd be like, 'She got too many pictures.' "

In the News

It's been three days since my last post, sorry. I'll make up for that with some articles worth reading:

I hope by now you've seen or experienced the Flight of the Conchords. Here is an album review for their latest album. The link gives you two free downloads to "Business Time" and "Ladies of the World" If you haven't seen any of their videos, like Business Time or Jenny or their famed rap song then you need to click on those links and watch and then search for more on the youtube internet.

Record Store Day - April 19th

Record Store Day is today, April 19th. I guess it's a day for independently owned record stores to celebrate their existence and what they stand for...good for those places, visit one if it's in your area.

Dan in Real Life - Album Review

Over this past weekend my wife and I watched Dan in Real Life. Good movie worth watching, especially with Steve Carell as a serious character, but less serious than in Little Miss Sunshine. One of the best things to extract from this movie is the soundtrack which is 99% written by, recorded by, sung by, played by Sondre Lerche. I'll post him in a separate post later on. The soundtrack is well worth listening to if not buying. I'm a big fan of this Sondre Lerche and I think most of you would be too. Very down to earth musician that plays some great upbeat but easy going indie music and has a great skill for songwriting. He's a very encapsulating artist, so much that when the music director for the movie gave the movie director a two disc sampling, he only listened to Sondre's music because he couldn't get past it. He refused to listen to anyone else and because of that he asked Sondre to do the soundtrack. If you watch the movie they have a feature on him in the bonus features. The songs Sondre writes for the movie are very fitting for every scene and really make the movie flow well. Give the soundtrack a listen, especially the "Modern Nature by Sondre Lerche and Lillian Samdal" track at the end of movie, and I'll post more on Sondre Lerche later.

WiiMan Superhero

I have to admit that I have a bunch of music related posts to post but I've been stuck out on-site for work and been unable to listen to music. If I can't listen to music then I can't recommend to you. So, I will instead distract you with WiiMan! (fully functional, read the blog link)

Speed Painting to Bluegrass

I was looking for an example of a bluegrass version of a Indie/Rock song and found this cool video:

The music is a cover of The White Stripes "Fell In Love With A Girl" from the Pickin' On Series. The Pickers cover a lot of ground, from the Beatles and Led Zeppelin to Relient K and The Killers. You can find their stuff on iTunes and Amazon.

Indie Rock & the string quartet tribute thereof

Apparently someone has felt the need to put indie music to a string quartet. After the article I've linked to three tracks from the album...

From the people that brought you such essential collections as The Dub Tribute to the Black Eyed Peas, The Sweet Sounds of Slim Shady: The Lounge Tribute to Eminem, and Un, Dos, Tres: An Electronic Tribute to Ricky Martin comes yet another masterpiece, Strung Out on Indie Rock Vol. 1: The String Quartet Tribute.

The String Quartet Tribute to Death Cab for Cutie's "Transatlanticism" makes its second showing on a Vitamin Records release here, having previously appeared on 2006's Ghost: The String Quartet Tribute to Death Cab for Cutie; the Pixies' "Debaser" and Elliott Smith's "Needle in the Hay" first surfaced in 2004, Sonic Youth's "Kool Thing" ,Bright Eyes' "The Calendar Hung Itself", and Muse's "Time Is Running Out" got the treatment in 2005, the Arcade Fire's "Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)" came out last year, and Jeff Buckley's "Last Goodbye" showed up in 2003.

Alas, Interpol's "The Heinrich Maneuver" and the White Stripes' "You Don't Know What Love Is (You Just Do What You're Told)" were too new to have graced last year's Interstellar: The String Quartet Tribute to Interpol and 2005's tribute to the White Stripes.

Thanks to Taylor Loftin for the tip.

Strung Out on Indie Rock Vol. 1: The String Quartet Tribute:

01 Debaser (The String Quartet Tribute to Pixies)
02 Kool Thing (The String Quartet Tribute to Sonic Youth)
03 You Don't Know What Love Is (You Just Do What You're Told) (The String Quartet Tribute to the White Stripes)
04 The Heinrich Maneuver (The String Quartet Tribute to Interpol)
05 Transatlanticism (The String Quartet Tribute to Death Cab for Cutie)
06 Needle in the Hay (The String Quartet Tribute to Elliott Smith)
07 Time Is Running Out (The String Quartet Tribute to Muse)
08 Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels) (The String Quartet Tribute to the Arcade Fire)
09 The Calendar Hung Itself (The String Quartet Tribute to Bright Eyes)
10 Last Goodbye (The String Quartet Tribute to Jeff Buckley)

Album Review:The Raconteurs

Seeing as Greg has posted a poll about which new album you would buy I felt it necessary to give you an honest review before you can honestly take the poll. And by me, I mean Pitchfork has put up a pretty fair album review today. I'll put up the Gnarls Barkley review here tomorrow. Here is an excerpt from the summary:

Despite leading much of the material, Brendan Benson doesn't contribute any "Brendan Benson songs" here; both he and White simply step forward as the occasion demands. The two vocalists, therefore, blur into one another in their roles as dual frontmen. White grows tremendously as a singer and gets a little of his mania back, while Benson tightens his belt a few notches and manages to sound just as excitable, notably on the tag-team vocal of "Salute Your Solution". Whether it was intended or not, White's personality sometimes overwhelms, and makes Consolers sound like a little sibling to Icky Thump-- a little less unique, certainly, but another loose, comfortable affirmation of what they do well.
