The lists of 2008 are starting to come out. Leading off is Last.fm (one of my favorite music sites) Best Artists of 2008. You can play a track from each artists.
Alternatively, the Best Albums of 2008 and the Best Tracks of 2008.
By the way, all of these lists are based on the number of listeners or plays on last.fm (or using their plugin for iTunes that logs what you play). This one's by the people, not the editors.
