when it rains, it plays music (Archive #9)

[Archive #9--Originally sent November 16, 2007]

Humans with ears,

Patrick Park : http://www.myspace.com/patrickpark . Really like his music because it's a lot like Matt Costa who I'm a huge fan of. Real good stuff, give him a listen, especially to "Here We Are".

Rogue Wave: http://www.myspace.com/roguewave . This band is one of many greats on BrushFire records, Jack Johnson's label. They have a really good alternative sound to them. Listen to anything on their myspace page. Buy their newest record, it's good.

ALO: http://www.myspace.com/alomusic . If you haven't heard ALO yet, go check them out now. They have that subtle Jack Johnson sound that we've come to know and love but they have pushed beyond the mellow surfing music that Johnson usually sticks too. Definitely worth a listen. I would say it's a cross between Jack Johnson and Donovan Frankenreiter.

Office: http://www.myspace.com/officemusic . I passed these guys on a while back but they've finally come out with their album and the previews on their myspace are delicious.(Thanks Gregly)

Beirut: http://www.myspace.com/beirut . I heard Beirut I guess two years ago on kexp and thought they were musically impressive but I forgot about them until now. The takeawayshows(see section below) for their new album got me hooked on them again: http://flyingclubcup.com/spip.php?rubrique1 . They have a very interesting sound in that they use all kinds of brass and stringed instruments but it all sounds great together, especially the lead singer's (Zach Condon) voice. They really put together an amazing sound unlike any other I've heard. You may or may not like them, but at least watch/listen to Nantes (video #1) and Forks and Knives (video #7) from the flyingclubcup link to hear/see a sampling of their musical abilities.

Chris O'Brien
: http://www.myspace.com/chrisobrien . Lighthouse is a real good tune. Well worth checking out this guy.

Cloud Cult
: First of all, check out this video of them in-studio: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMpOhwUTUwc&eurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Estevekmccoy%2Ecom%2F
Then head to their myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/cloudcult . They are an experimental indie rock/alt band that really has some good music going on, but their full album is a slight bit strange. I swear they've been on something involved with Zach Braff before...or should. (Thanks for this one Jason)

Bishop Allen
: http://www.myspace.com/bishopallen . I've sent this band before but they've updated their myspace with some newer songs and came out with an album since then. If you haven't heard them, definitely check them out, some great musical stylings. Listen to "Click Click Click Click" and "Rain".

Fionn Regan: http://www.myspace.com/fionnregan . Good stuff here, listen to all songs, especially Blackwater Child.

The National: http://www.myspace.com/thenational . They are a big up and coming band with a really good sound. Something bothers me about the singer but I'm into the music. Worth a listen.

Jose Gonzalez: http://www.myspace.com/josegonzalez . He's been around for a while now but I'd never sent him out. Definitely worth checking out. Two great songs are Down the Line and Heartbeat. I see him as a more musically upbeat Nick Drake with a stronger voice.

Laura Veirs : http://www.myspace.com/lauraveirs . I honestly have nothing to say here except check her out, not bad.

You have terrific taste in music. Chris O'Brien is most excellent. Have you heard his song "Rosa"? Simply awesome.
